Ciara Eastell, Chief Executive, Libraries Unlimited in Devon
President, Society of Chief Librarians
This World Book Night is a particularly special one for me as it coincides with the official launch of Libraries Unlimited, our new staff and community owned mutual delivering library services across Devon.
I’m really pleased to be giving out Am I Normal Yet? by Holly Bourne which I will be doing on the streets of Barnstaple and in Exeter to coincide with our two main launch events.
World Book Night is such a perfect day to launch our new organisation as it’s a celebration of reading; a true partnership between authors, publishers, libraries and The Reading Agency and encourages people across the country to get involved and share their love of reading and libraries with others in their local community. That spirit of collaboration, of community engagement underpinned by the passion for great books and shared reading experiences reflects our ambitions and vision for Libraries Unlimited.
We’re thrilled that Michael Morpugo will be helping us launch at Exeter Library and equally proud to have the support of the children’s author Claire Barker at Barnstaple Library. We will be joined by our Friends Groups, our staff and partners and all the people who have helped us set up our new organisation. Across the county, we have a day of exciting events planned with special golden tickets planted in all 50 of our libraries.
As you can probably tell, World Book Night this year is a particularly important day personally and professionally for me. I’m sure we’ll have lots of fun (and quite probably lots of cake) but I suspect the highlight of World Book Night for me will be those great moments of joy you get as a World Book Night giver when you give a wonderful book to a complete stranger for free and with a simple message to enjoy reading it. That’s a great feeling and I can’t wait to do it again this year.
