This is a strategic planning framework which enables us to develop, deliver and promote reading services within libraries.

This is a strategic planning framework which enables us to develop, deliver and promote reading services within libraries.

This offer sets out what public libraries will offer in order to provide a modern reading service within a local community.

It builds on public demand for a lively and engaging reading offer with reading groups, challenges, promotions and author events. It aims to focus libraries’ attention and efforts on promoting key shared reading programmes. It is supported by the reading calendar, a toolbox of reading programmes and a raft of national partnerships.

This offer has been developed in partnership with The Reading Agency.

The Books and Reading Group have created an excellent and informative Reading Advocacy PowerPoint presentation, designed for members to use for advocacy purposes. The presentation covers the basics of the Reading Offer, key reading statistics, why reading is so important, future Reading Offer plans and opportunities and library interventions on the reading journey from birth through life.

The presentation can be downloaded here.

This Arts Council England funded package ‘Making the Most of Your Library’ has been developed by Leicestershire Library Service in partnership with Society of Chief Librarians (SCL) for volunteers working in community managed or community led libraries for use nationally and it was co-created with volunteers.

The pilot found that it was more successful where the package was introduced to volunteers by library staff. The pilot evaluation report can be read in full here.

If you are a volunteer considering using this package please get in touch with your local library service contact first, if you don’t know who that is please email SCL at societyofchieflibraries@gmail.com  and they will try to put you in touch with the correct person.

If you find this package useful please let us know via Twitter @UKSCL or by email societyofchieflibrarians@gmail.com
