Talking with readers on World Book Day
‘The best book in the world is quite simply the one you think is the best. You can discover that for yourself but we are here to help you find it.’
Talking with readers is our new online course designed to help library staff to speak with visitors about books and reading. The course is aimed at anyone with a public-facing role in libraries and will help give you the skills and confidence to approach customers and encourage their reading.
The course is divided into three sections, all of which are packed with simple, practical ideas, tasks and techniques:
- Starting conversations
Including, initiating and managing conversation openers and understanding the book audience and genre appeal.
- Making suggestions
Including how to make book suggestions and quick and practical ways to develop book knowledge.
- Creating opportunities
Including listening and using feedback to improve your library offer.
This course has been created for SCL by Opening The Book with funding from Arts Council England.
